A buddy/handyman says he can do the electrical work I need done in my house. Why do I need to spend more to hire an electrician to do the same work?
Believe it or not an electrician in Ontario needs to have served a five year apprenticeship to have the knowledge and training to tackle all that’s involved in electrical work. In short, electricity kills! You want somebody who knows what they are doing and not somebody who looked up “you tube” for a tutorial before starting work on your house/business. At the end of the day would you put a cost on the most important thing in your life, your family? Why trust somebody who has no training with your home, possessions and your family’s lives. Add to this no one, except an electrical contractor, can provide insurance or warranty on any electrical work done in Ontario.
I have hired a contractor to renovate my basement and he says he‘s bringing in an electrician. How do I know he is actually using a qualified guy or even if he’s doing the electrical work himself?
You can ask to meet the electrician and see their electrical contractor license. Also ask for an electrical permit and inspection by the “Electrical Safety Authority”. Even a regular qualified electrician can’t get these. You need to have a master’s license and be a registered electrical contractor. Don’t feel you are putting the electrician or the general contractor out by asking for this. It is your house/business after all. If the contractor says that you don’t need the paperwork or that the electrician isn’t available to meet it might be time to move on to a contractor who cares for you and your needs.
What’s the point in a permit/inspection when getting electrical work done in my home/business? Does it cost money?
The first thing a permit does is confirms the permit holder has the necessary training and qualifications to work on your electrical project. The second thing it does is maintain a high standard of work completed. Each project has its own set of electrical code standards that have to be met in order for the job to pass inspection and receive a “certificate of inspection” by the ESA. Finally, if ever you want to sell or rent your property, a permit and certificate of inspection is a great incentive for a buyer. Many real estate agents will tell you upgrades to your property, that has the appropriate paperwork to back it up, will fetch a better price in the market. And for buyers its piece of mind that renovations and upgrades are safe, correctly installed and don’t need redoing. There is associated fee's charged by the ESA that depend on the size and scope of the work being done. We cover these fee's in our price.
I hear electricians are messy and cause lots of damage when doing electrical work?
Artane Electric takes huge pride in leaving a job in the same condition that we found it in, sometimes even better! From landscape electrics to wiring basements we clean up any work we do as we consider it part of the job. We provide drop sheets to protect floors, we plastic off areas of your home/business so we don’t spread dust; we sweep/vacuum at the end of a day’s work as we know customer satisfaction is what gets us referrals and more work. We also take pride in our green initiative. We recycle all packaging and safely dispose of old electrical fixtures, wire and waste in partnership with the Waste Division of Ontario. When commencing a job the customer is aware of everything that’s involved so there are no surprises. We do our upmost to keep damage, such as cutting drywall, to a minimum and never leave exposed wires live or dangerous conditions on the property that the client might be in contact with. Safety is number one with us.
I'm thinking of doing landscape work on my property. Do I need an electrician to install garden plugs or for power for equipment like a water feature might have?
Outside electrics have their own set of code’s that have to be met. Artane Electric specializes in landscape electrical. When running circuits underground for instance you need to be a certain depth to meet code requirements, plus not all cable can go directly into the ground. We cover all electrical requests from landscape lighting to swimming pools/hot tub installs.
When getting electrical work done, what’s the single biggest misconception?
One common misconception revolves around safety and the lack of knowledge. It is alarming to see homeowners engage in electrical work without considering the potential risks involved. Attempting to run wiring without proper training and code awareness can lead to serious consequences. Recently, while investigating issue’s in a customer’s family room, we encountered a concerning situation. Previous contractors had added receptacles and lighting to the room’s original wiring, causing the existing circuits to exceed their maximum capacity and overload the circuit. Furthermore, the breaker panel was already full. To rectify this unsafe setup, we had to install a separate "pony" panel and establish a new circuit to ensure proper balance and safety. All the work underwent inspection by the ESA (Electrical Safety Authority) and successfully passed. This serves as a strong reminder of the significance of employing professional and qualified tradespeople.
How much does electrical work cost?
Each job is unique so we don’t do set prices. We do give free estimates and work with our customer’s budget and requirements to give you the best service for the best professional price. For trouble shooting callouts or emergency calls we charge $150 + HST which covers the first half hour of work on site.
